1845 from Lt.-Colonel [William] Strahan

A 3-page signed document dated 5'' April 1845 from Lt.-Colonel [William] Strahan, Quarter Master-General of the Army, to Lovell accompanied by 19-pages of extracts from the Minutes of the Secret Department and orders of the Military Department. Strahan requests that Lovell submit a report to the Commander-in-Chief on "the necessity of otherwise for the 35th Regiment N.I remaining at Sircey. as His Lordship... can alone look to you to guide his opinionon the subject in question.. The annexures contain the detailed opinions of John Fryer Thomas, Chief Secretary of the Civil Department, Fort St. George and the aforementioned R.D. Parker, as to the importance of retaining a greater presence on the region. These include statements of troop numbers and information derived from the "latest intelligence' which seems to indicate that the Portuguese authorities in Goa have been "unable if willing to capture the Chiefs who have taken refuge in that territory.
