This is one of the most comprehensive and exhaustive memoirs about the state of Punjab covering a period of thirty five years between 1858 and 1893. These memoirs by a British civil servant who served in Punjab for such a long time throw a flood of light on the political, social and administrative development during this period of colonial rule. The narration, though autobiographical, is one the whole very objective and unbiased. This account gives a British/Western perspective on India's culture and its infinite variety. It is also very informative because it is based on the personal noting in his diary and the letters written by him to his mother during his service in India.
