7th Bengal light Cavalry was raised in Gazipur on April 5th 1805

by Captain William Hunter Douglas Knox and Lieutenant James Richard Mockler. The regiment fought in the First Anglo Sikh War and during 1857 was stationed at Lucknow. More than half the regiment deserted to the rebel cause on May 31st 1857 and the remainder remained loyal to the British. The loyal men were given two months pay and sent on furlough, the regiment ceased to exist after the 1857 rebellion.
