A fascinating archival document detailing the appointment of Lt. Col. Peter Lumsden as Quarter Master General of the Army in India. The document is a contemporary letter, written in a neat hand, and covers all four sides of a quarto bifolium. Dated May 12th, 1868, and signed by H.W. Norman, Colonel and Secretary to the Government of India, the letter makes a case for Lumsden's appointment based on his "very special and peculiar qualifications and knowledge" possessed in a "remarkable degree." The letter goes on to detail Lumsden's relevant experience, including a Political Mission in Afghanistan, service under Sir Robert Napier in Central India, and the Bhootan expedition of 1865-66, ultimately concluding that Lumsden was confirmed in his appointment by the Governor General. Provenance: From a large archive of material kept by General Sir Peter Lumsden, G.C.B., C.S.I., and passed down through descendants of his brother, General Sir Harry Lumsden. Sir Peter & Lady Lumsden had no children.
