AN OUTLINE HISTORY 1ST PUNJAB REGIMENT 1759 - 1944

The 1st Punjab Regiment has a notable Sikh connection within its ranks. When the Madras Army underwent reorganization in 1902, Punjabi Sikhs were recruited into the regiment's 1st, 2nd, and 10th Battalions. Alongside Punjabi Muslims, Jat Sikhs, and Rajputs, these Sikh soldiers formed an integral part of the regiment's composition. Throughout its history, the 1st Punjab Regiment, as well as its successor, the Punjab Regiment, benefited from the significant presence of Sikh soldiers. They played pivotal roles in various conflicts, including World War I, World War II, and the events surrounding the Partition of India. After partition, Sikh soldiers were given the choice to transfer to the Indian Army due to their religious affiliations, resulting in a predominantly Sikh composition in the Indian Army's Punjab Regiment, while the regiment in Pakistan consisted mainly of Punjabi Muslims and Pathans.
