Baghdad

Check out this fascinating folding map of Baghdad from World War I, published in 1917 by the Survey of India for official use only. With a scale of 4 miles to 1 inch, this map covers the city of Baghdad and its surroundings. The map's pristine condition and historical significance cannot be understated. It's particularly interesting to note the role of Sikh soldiers in the World Wars. In the words of General Sir Frank Messervy, "In the last two world wars 83,005 turban-wearing Sikh soldiers were killed and 109,045 were wounded. They all died or were wounded for the freedom of Britain and the world, and during shellfire, with no other protection but the turban, the symbol of their faith." As we admire this map from a century ago, let's take a moment to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for our freedom .
