Capt Christopher B Birdwood Probyns Horse

A small leather case The case measures 18.75 x 7.75 ins and is 10.75 inches deep. It is boldly named below the lock [which opens and closes properly but has no key]. The leather along the hinge is cracked and broken but the hinge works perfectly well on the material beneath. The interior has a thin division but we are not sure of the case’s precise use. The Hon Christopher Birdwood served in the same regiment as his father, Probyn’s Horse, 11th Bengal Lancers and was at one time his adc. He later succeeded as the 2nd Baron Birdwood. This was sold with other items from the family’s country house in Worcestershire after the death of the 3rd Baron some years ago

Indian of colonial whip handle inlaid with bone and metal The decorative wooden whip handle measures 13 ins in length and 1½ ins in diameter at the wider end. There are traces of old leather fixing at the other end and the handle is carved to enable a firm grip. The family from whom this came believed it was Indian . It may have been a camel whip and is probably 19th century. There are faintly engraved scratch initials to the inlaid brass at the end
