Check out this fascinating piece of history from the collection of Maj Gen Sir Peter Lumsden - a manuscript letter from 1871, in which General Lord Napier of Magdala provides a positive report on the inspection of the Quarter Master General's Office at Army Headquarters in Simla. The letter, written in a fine secretarial hand and marked in purple ink, praises the efficiency of the office and credits Colonel Lumsden, along with the officers and subordinate officers under his orders, for their state of administrative efficiency. This item, which is part of a large archive of General Lumsden's papers passed down through descendants of his brother, General Sir Harry Lumsden, is mounted on an old card album page. General Lumsden himself had a distinguished career in India, China, and Afghanistan, and was the author of the standard work on his brother's regiment, Lumsden of the Guides. He was made a G.C.B. and an ADC to Queen Victoria for his service.
