A clean copy for what was a working manual, this example signed in ink on the first and last blank pages Sergt. F. T. Skingle, S. & T Corps India. The sergeant was probably involved in parts of the work in setting up the military camps. The first 20 pages or so list the troops attending, giving name of officers holding special positions on the staffs down to Brigade level. Interesting tables give the approximate strength of the force – totalling some 1,700 British officers, 18,000 British and 36.000 Indian troops, 10,000 troop horses, 1.300 chargers, and 2.500 transport camels. This book provides a vast amount of detail on everything from duties of officers, tentage, allocation of furniture, discipline, and postal information to veterans, pay and allpwances, programme, tickets & invitations, the Military Tournament, etc. A scarce survical of a work which will have had a rather limited circulation and was very much a working manual rather than a souvenir. We have only had one previous complete copy of this book in the last decade.
