Delhi Durbar 1903. The elephant procession heading for the Amphitheatre

A 8½ x 6 ins photograph on part of an old card album page showing the procession of elephants en route to the amphitheatre at the 1903 Delhi Durbar celebrating the Coronation of the King Emperor Edward VII. The leading five eelphants carry staff officers and other senior officers in thier howdahs. The next two elephants shaded by parasols [a traditional symbol of royalty in India as well as a protection from the sun] carry, in the first H.E. the Viceroy, Lord Curzon and Lady Curzon and in the second the King’s brother, H.R.H. Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and the Duchess of Connaught. Lord Curzon takes the prime position as he is the representative of the King Emperor [unable to attend because of his health] who gives away his precedence only to the sovereign. The giant elephants carrying their howdahs were on loan from Indian Princes. The mahouts on the leading elephants wear liveries with the monograms of the Duke and the Viceroy. The reverse shows a crowded scene outside the Jama Masjid mosque in Delhi.
