Delhi Durbar 1911. The arrival of the King Emperor

Coronation Durbar, Delhi. State entry of the King Emperor through the King’s gate. A very good real photograph postcard by Rewachand Motumul & Sons, Karachi showing the moment when the people first saw their King Emperor and both he and they were disappointed. It is ironic that the gate is flanked by two stone elephants and it was the fact that the King chose not to ride on an elephant that caused the lack of excitement in the general public. They expected a king to ride on an elephant and found HM did not particularly stand out among the mass of quite similarly uniformed staff before and around him. King George V is recorded as being surprised by the lack of cheering but he had simply not made the impact he would have had he rode as Kings traditionally rode to Delhi.
