Dive into our archives and discover a fascinating piece of history

A manuscript copy of letters between the Secretary of State for India and the Quarter Master General regarding favorable pension grants for Lt. Col. Peter Lumsden in 1866. This blue folio sheet of paper includes a forwarding memo signed by John S. Paton, Quarter Master General, and dated Simla 2nd October 1866. Though it's sunned along the top inch and slightly chipped on one margin, this incredible artifact sheds light on the pension process and the support Lumsden received from both the Secretary of State and the Quarter Master General. Provenance tells us that this piece comes from a large archive of material kept by General Sir Peter Lumsden, G.C.B., C.S.I., and passed down through descendants of his brother, General Sir Harry Lumsden. Though Sir Peter and Lady Lumsden had no children, their legacy lives on through this remarkable archival piece.
