Here's a fascinating archival piece from the collection of General Sir Peter Stark Lumsden - a printed Special Memorandum entitled "Appd Victoria R. The Queen's Aides de Camp" on a four-page bifolium, setting out the duties, rotas, and more of an ADC, dated March 18, 1864. Accompanying this memorandum is a blue paper bifolium written on the first side only in a secretarial hand, addressed from HORSE GUARDS, S.W., dated June 21, 1870, addressed to Colonel Lumsden, C.S.I., Bengal Staff Corps, Quarter Master General, Bengal, and signed by W. Paulet, A.G. (General Lord William Paulet, Adjutant General). This archival piece provides a glimpse into the instructions and duties of Queen Victoria's Aides de Camp in the 1860s, and the document is beautifully preserved. The piece comes from a large archive of the General's papers passed down through descendants of his brother, General Sir Harry Lumsden. General Sir Peter Stark Lumsden had a distinguished career in India, China, and Afghanistan and was made G.C.B. and an ADC to Queen Victoria.
