This particular copy of the book holds exceptional provenance. It was initially owned by William Charles Macpherson, 4th of Blairgowrie (1855-1936), an illustrious member of the Indian Civil Service. Macpherson served as the Chief Secretary to the Government of Bengal, a Justice of the Peace, and a member of the Bengal Legislative Council from 1902 to 1911. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Star of India (C.S.I.) in 1903 and held a position on the Board of Revenue of Calcutta between 1906 and 1911. Intriguingly, this significant book found its way into the hands of W. C. Macpherson, C.S.I., Chief Secretary to the Government of Bengal, renowned for his influential role in the Indian Civil Service. A gift from an unknown individual, the dedication on November 12, 1904, reveals the gratitude bestowed upon Macpherson, connecting his notable career with this cherished volume.
