HISTORY OF THE IST BATTALION IST PUNJAB REGT

Originated as the 3rd Battalion of Coast Sepoys under the East India Company. Became the 1st Battalion, 2nd Regiment of Madras Native Infantry. Earned the elephant insignia for valor at the Battle of Assaye in 1803. Participated in the 1st China War and acquired a golden dragon insignia. Renamed as the 62nd Punjabis in 1903. Active participation in World War One in the Middle East. Reorganized as the 1st Battalion, 1st Punjab Regiment after World War One.

Stationed on the North West Frontier during the interwar years. Engaged in conflicts across North Africa, the Middle East, and Burma in World War Two. Tasked with restoring colonial authority in Singapore and the Dutch East Indies after World War Two. Became part of the Pakistan Army in 1947. Merged with other regiments in 1956 to form the Punjab Regiment.
