Immerse yourself in history

Immerse yourself in history with this fascinating artifact from the collection of Maj Gen Sir Peter Lumsden - a manuscript letter from 1885 notifying Lumsden that his new insignia of the Order of the Bath (GCB) is ready for collection. The letter, addressed from the College of Arms and signed by Albert W. Woodd Garter, is beautifully written in a secretarial hand and is mounted on an old card album page. This piece comes from a large archive of the General's papers passed down through descendants of his brother, General Sir Harry Lumsden. General Sir Peter Stark Lumsden had an impressive career in India, China, and Afghanistan and was the author of the standard work on his brother's regiment, Lumsden of the Guides. He joined the Bengal Army in 1847 and served in several conflicts throughout his career, ultimately being made a G.C.B. and an ADC to Queen Victoria.
