Griffin. Raised in England by her father, a former British army colonel turned newspaperman in India, she and her sisters had varying degrees of connection to British India. Victoria Cross wrote numerous novels spanning from the mid-1890s to the 1930s, set in diverse global locations, including the Klondike, but not exclusively focused on India, which differentiated her from her sister Violet Nicolson.

Violet, who wrote as Laurence Hope, was a poet known for sensual and erotic themes, often exploring unconventional relationships. While both sisters achieved immense popularity, Violet displayed a stronger sensitivity towards India and its people, unlike Victoria. The exact nature of their influence on each other and the reasons behind Violet's deeper connection to India are subjects to be explored. Notably, both sisters gained fame, with some of Violet's poetry collections also selling over a million copies.
