Lumsden family

Lumsden family [Generals Sir Harry and Sir Peter], etc A disbound album of newspaper cuttings1880-1912. This disbound album of newspaper cuttings from 1880-1912 provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the well-connected Lumsden family, including Generals Sir Harry and Sir Peter. The album contains 18 sides of newspaper cuttings and approximately another 30 thin card leaves with numerous further cuttings unpasted scattered between them. Although the boards and outer spine are lacking, the album has sound stitching and all edges are gilt. It appears to have been kept by one of Sir Harry Lumsden’s children, possibly Miss Edith or H. D. Lumsden, whose wedding in Ottawa to Mary Frederica Waitney is reported on the next page.

The cuttings cover a wide range of topics, including the marriage of Hugh P Lumsden of Clova to Mary Bellasis in 1904, a lengthy review of Sir Peter Lumsden’s book "Lumsden of the Guides" from the Banffshire Journal in 1899, the marriage of Ernest Francis Lumsden, Balmedie, to Grace C M E Flower by the Bishop of Edinburgh, Sir Peter Lumsden’s spying disguised as a holy man, obituaries of Gen Sir Harry Lumsden, articles about Canadian railways, the murder of Lt G H Lumsden, 13th Bengal Lancers in 1880, Sir Peter Lumsden’s Indian services, and Aberdeen and the Volunteers in 1900. This collection of cuttings provides a valuable insight into the lives of the Lumsden family and their connections to Banffshire, the British Indian Army, and the Canadian Pacific Railway, among other things. The album is particularly interesting for its coverage of Sir Peter Lumsden's British Indian services, which would likely include his work in the Punjab region. This album was part of a large archive of documents and photographs that passed from Sir Peter Lumsden through a branch of the family descended from his brother, General Sir Harry Lumsden. Sir Peter and Lady Lumsden had no children.
