Maharaja Chandra Shum Shere Jung Bahadur Rana's Appeal to the people of Nepal for THEEmancipation of Slaves AND Abolition of Slavery in the country. KATMANDU( NEPAL) , Printed 1925 During his rule, Chandra Shamsher was known for being conservative and despotic, but he also implemented several important reforms. He is credited with the abolition of slavery in Nepal and the signing of the Nepal-Britain Treaty of 1923, which recognized Nepal as an independent nation and an ally of Britain. Despite his opposition to public education, he modernized Nepal's education system and made it mandatory for all Rana children to receive an education.

Chandra Shamsher died in Kathmandu in 1929. He was survived by his wife Sri 3 Maharani Chandra Loka Bhakta and several children, including Mohan Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, Baber Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, Kaiser Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, Singha Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, and Krishna Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana. He was succeeded as Prime Minister by his brother Bhim Shamsher.
