Surveyor General of India by CAPTAIN T. G. MONTCOMERIE, ENGINEERS. F. I.G.S. IstAssistant G. T. Survey of India, The assistants under his orders: during 1855,56,57. Thomas Montgomerie's 1859 map of Kashmir, India was created as part of the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India. Montgomerie was a British military engineer and cartographer who worked in the topographical survey of Kashmir, Jammu, Ladak, and Balti for nearly 10 years. He divided the map into two volumes, with each volume covering a different portion of the region, in order to provide a more manageable and usable map and to allow for a clearer view of the details of each portion of the region.

The map would have included detailed information about geographical features, roads, and other landmarks, providing valuable information for anyone traveling or operating in the region. Today, such maps serve as historical records and provide insight into the geographical understanding and mapping practices of the past. At the time that Montgomerie created the map, the whole of the region of Kashmir was under the suzerainty of the Sikh kingdom of Lahore in the 1840s. However, the decline of the Lahore kingdom led to the Anglo-Sikh war and the subsequent pledge of some territories, including Kashmir and Jammu, to the English.
