"In India" is a book by British journalist and writer, George Warrington Steevens (1869-1900). Steevens was born in Sydenham and educated at City of London School and Balliol College, Oxford. He was a fellow of Pembroke College, Oxford and also spent some time at Cambridge where he edited a weekly periodical. As a journalist, he was known for his clear writing style and was connected with several publications including National Observer, The Pall Mall Gazette, and Daily Mail. Steevens was a famous war correspondent of his time, covering several wars such as the Mahdist War in Sudan and the Second Boer War in South Africa. During the siege of Ladysmith in the Boer War, he kept up morale with his witty articles published in Ladysmith Lyre. He died of enteric fever (typhoid) in January 1900.
