NASIRIYAH. Turkey in Asia

NASIRIYAH. Turkey in Asia (Rough Provisional Issue-2nd Edn.) Degree sheet No 3 I. (F.O.U.O.). Scale 4 Miles to 1 inch. Survey of India [Calcutta] 1916. Check out this rare folding map of Nasiriyah, Turkey in Asia from World War I! This artifact provides valuable insight into the geography and military operations of the Nasiriyah region during WWI. Published in 1916 by the Survey of India for official use only, the map covers part of the Province of Basrah and has a scale of 4 miles to 1 inch. It folds down into 16 plates and has original printed card endpapers, making it a portable and essential tool for military operations in the field. The map's pristine condition and the indistinct pencil signature of an A.S.C. officer underscore its historical significance. It is especially interesting to note that Sikh soldiers fought in the Gallipoli campaign in Turkey during World War I, raising the possibility that they may have used this map during their operations in the region. The Battle of Nasiriyah was a part of the Mesopotamian Campaign, which aimed to secure the oil fields of the Ottoman Empire and protect the British interests in the Persian Gulf region.
