FULLARTON, William.[1754-1808] raised his own regiment which was despatched to the Cape only to see their design on the Dutch colony foiled by prior arrival of French reinforcements. Redirected to India, they joined the campaign against Haidar Ali. He was gazetted a colonel in the army of the HEIC, and in 1782 suppressed the Kollars of Madura and captured Karur and Dindigul. In May 1783 he assumed general command of forces in the southernmost part of the Carnatic, invading Mysore and taking Dharapuram, Palghat, and Coimbatore. Further feats of arms were forestalled by the peace patched up with Tipu, who had succeeded his father, Haidar. Throughout the campaign Fullarton showed high abilities; James Mill praised him as the first British commander to look after his commissariat and organize intelligence. On his return home he published the present work in support of his attempt to recoup the £20,000 he claimed to have spent in India, after some ten years he succeeded in getting back nearly £16,000. He went on to become Governor of Trinidad before returning to his native Fife in Scotland
