Punjab District Gazetteers Vol-xviii-a

Punjab District Gazetteers Vol-xviii-a by Wack .f. B Publication date 1933 This is the third edition of the Montgomery District Gazetteer, with the first being compiled and published in 1884 and the second by Mr. (now Sir Patrick) Fagan, Settlement Collector, in 1899-1900. The third edition has been compiled by Mr. F.B. Wace, I.O.S., late Colonization Officer, Nili Bar at Pakpattan, and Mr. F.C. Bourne, I.C.S., Settlement Officer, Lower Bari Doab Canal Colony.

The considerable trans-Eavi portion has been removed, while agricultural conditions throughout the district have been revolutionized by the construction of the Lower Bari Doab Canal and the canals of the Sutlej Valley Project. The editors have retained such portions of the previous gazetteers as are still relevant, and for most of the historical material, description of the ancient tribes inhabiting the district, and an exhaustive discussion of the flora, the editors are indebted to Mr. Purser's classical Settlement Report of 1878. The editors have incorporated in the gazetteer extracts from Sir John Marshall's book on "Mohenjo-Daro and the Indus civilization." The Director of Land Records has arranged for the compilation of the maps at the end of this volume, and individual contributions have been acknowledged in the text. The greater part of this revision was carried out in 1933. The book also includes four color folding maps at the rear, adding to its value as a geographical resource.
