The Indian Cotton Mill Industry

The Indian Cotton Mill Industry: Its Potentialities as a Source of Supply for Piece Goods to the East and Near East Empire Markets During the War. India's involvement in textiles dates back to ancient times, but the first textile mill only emerged in 1818 in Calcutta. Subsequently, a Parsi merchant established another mill in Mumbai in 1854, sparking both local and international trade. The 1850s marked a significant period when textile production gained momentum.

While handmade clothing found appreciation in Africa, China, and domestically, the establishment of a cotton mill in Ahmadabad in 1861 intensified competition due to Gujarat's cotton reputation. By the late 19th century, India had 178 cotton textile mills, but obstacles arose during World War I, with subsequent flourishing afterward. The number of mills surged to 249 by 1901 and a remarkable 417 by 1945, providing employment for 510,000 workers.
