The letters from the Quarter Master General dated between 1851-1857

The letters from the Quarter Master General dated between 1851-1857 provide valuable insights into the military career of Ensign P.S. Lumsden. In one letter, Lt. Col. J.G. Drummond instructs Lumsden to proceed to the Peshawar Field Force. On the other side of the same card leaf is a copy of a letter to the Q.M.G. from R.J.H. Bird, Colonel, Secretary to the Government of India in the Military Department, expressing satisfaction with the surveying party of the Great Trigonometrical Survey. The letter mentions the services contributed by three officers of the Q.M.G. department, including Captains Lumsden, Allgood, and Johnson, who had been surveying the mountainous territories of Maharaja Goolab Singh of Kashmir. These copy letters are rare and offer a glimpse into the official army records that may have been lost over time. The archive of General Sir Peter Stark Lumsden, passed down through his brother General Sir Harry Lumsden's descendants, is the source of these letters. General Sir Peter Stark Lumsden had a distinguished military career and was the author of the standard work on his brother's regiment Lumsden of the Guides.
