Manuscript documents A largely unrecorded incident of Indian history, the South Mahratta disturbances brought together a number of officers who were to serve with distinction in later campaigns. This collection of documents shed light on some intriguing aspects of the minutiae of the expedition, and come from the papers of Lt.-Col. Sir Lovell Benjamin Badcock Lovell, commander of The 15th King's Hussars at the time of the disturbances at South Mahratta, India. The is a 3 page true copy of a letter from W. Courtney, Political Superintendent at Sawuntwaree to R/obert] D[eane | Parker, Joint Magistrate at Canara, dated February 21* 1845, attested over Parker's signature. Parker relays the news of the fall of the Forts at Munnohur and Mansontosh on the 26' January and the pursuit of the "Insurgent Chiefs, with about two hundred followers' towards the Goa Frontier by Lt.-Colonel Outram. He had caught up with them sheltering in the rebellious villages of Oosup and Hewel and had 'attacked and routed (them] with considerable loss...compelling) them to seek shelter in the thick Jungles on the Southern boundary of the State, and in the Portuguese Possessions. The latest intelligence shows that thePortuguese authorities are co-operating in rounding up the remaining ring-leaders and their residual following.
