The Punjab of a Hundred Years Ago as Described by V. Jacquemont (1831) and A. Soltykoff (1842), Lahore: Punjab Government Record Office Publications, Monograph No. 18, 1935. The Russian traveller, writer and artist, Prince Alexis Soltykoff (1806-1859) made several journeys to India and Sri Lanka between 1841 and 1846, where he produced exquisite drawings of the people, landscapes, processions, hunting scenes and ceremonies. These drawings were later published and became an instant success, earning the prince the title of 'The Indian' amongst his friends in the Russian and French aristocracy. Jacquemont was a French botanist and geologist. He travelled to India in 1828, and remained there for the rest of his life. He visited Amber in Rajputana, met with the Sikh ruler Ranjit Singh at his capital Lahore, and visited the kingdom of Ladakh in the Himalayas. He also visited Bardhaman in Bengal in November 1829. He died of cholera in Mumbai on December 7, 1832.
