"A narrative account of the revolt in Central India, the whole tract between the Jumna and Narbasda rivers including Rajputana, compiled from official dispatches and reports. Major concern is with the military suppression of incipient rebellion" (Ladendorf). "General Sir Archibald Hunter. when inspecting the Jhansi Brigade in the winter of 1906-07, suggested that 'all officers should be made acquainted with the details of the operations within the Brigade area, especially those leading to the capture of Jhansi, and that these operations might form the basis for maneuvers and staff rides'. To enable this suggestion to be carried out, the history of the Revolt in Central India has been compiled from the original despatches and reports of those engaged in the events narrated by Major R. G. Burton" (Preface). Reginald George Burton (1864-1951) retired with the rank of lieutenant-colonel and served with 94th Russell's Infantry, an Indian Army regiment raised in 1813.
